It gives the number of visitors to an Internet site/address.
Through a temporary storage of an IP address a visitor is counted only once despite repeated entries to the same Internet site/address.
It leads to certain fuzziness when different users enter the same Internet site through a common access (e.g. Internet cafe) using the same IP address.
